I am in deep and irrevocable love with piano arrangements of non-piano music—and especially arrangements like this version of the Professor Layton “Puzzles” theme, which are so much more than a note-to-note transcription. And while I’m no composer, I’ve been playing piano since I was 11, and wanted to mess around with an Omori song or two—so, here we are!

v1, February–April 2023. Thought this song and “Spaces In-between” might be in the same key, played around to confirm, and it took off from there. First time actually finishing & publishing a piano arrangement \o/ It’s a bit rough, especially where the White Space motif comes in, and the left hand could have more variation, but overall I’m pretty satisfied with it!
Intentionally lacks legato, pedal, and most dynamic markings because I didn’t feel like wrangling MuseScore more than I already had figure those can be left to the player. Personally, I play it with lots of legato, gratuitous sustain, and overall mid-soft except where noted.
Fun fact: I wanted to incorporate pieces from Pavane pour une infante défunte, especially the part in a similar key (1:14 in the linked video), but my “process” (transcribe the left hand, then the melody, then mess around with other notes for ~flourish~) didn’t leave much room for major improvisations. Mostly putting this here as a self-reminder, if I ever revisit the composition…. >:Vc
edit: This has nothing to do with anything directly, but for the record, the day after making this page I found this song, and then its piano version. Sound familiar?!??
Some notes on my playthrough:
- The recording posted was the 11th take—not including countless prior attempts on other days. There are some pedaling quirks but I’m happy I finally got all the notes right in one go \o"/
- My kingdom for decent recording equipment…. Shout-out to Audacity for some (very sparse) noise reduction.
- On that note (har har) I think the volume differentials could’ve come out better but oh well. It always sounds richer and more subtle and everything in person >:V
- My right hand is physically unable to reach a full octave; if you listen closely I have a few notes down on the sheet music that aren’t played. The chord in measure 65 is “split” from my left hand jumping up to play the lower F#.
- The very end, meanwhile, may or may not be possible for anyone to play as an actual arpeggio. I kept it that way on the sheet music because shrug, that’s the spirit of the sound, but IMO it also sounds alright with each note more defined.
more???
