Slade Auctor

Roleplaying is one of the first ways I was social on the world wide web. For the unfamiliar: You take a character and write about them doing things, and other people reply and write about their own characters doing things with yours. Collaborative, improvisational storytelling—although kid!me didn’t think of it that way. I just thought it was a fun way to kill time.

Of all the short-lived, one-off characters I’ve spawned for RPs, Slade Auctor has managed to be the most memorable. Why, I’m not exactly sure. He was made for ’Souls RPG, a forum I was frankly a little too young for but which welcomed me with open arms anyway. At the suggestion of some newbie character creation guide (which I cannot find again for the life of me), I modeled Slade loosely after myself. His surname translates, simply, to “author.”

So, yes, he’s a writer. No, he doesn’t have opposable thumbs. On paper (pun not intended) he might’ve been turned into a thumb-having not!werewolf, with time and character development; in practice he never got there. Nowadays he sports a thick coat of amber, encased 5ever in my files and now this Toyshelf site.

And yes, I designed this specific page as a #throwback to early-aughts web design. Colors and grungy textures and shadow effects and a photoshopped banner with song lyrics! Wow!! Did you know I cut my teeth on HTML/CSS through RP post templates?
